The Art of Coaching
Coaching provides opportunities to be a positive influence for students and help them develop important skills for everyday life. This is emphasized by Trevor Daniels, the head coach for the Elmira High School varsity basketball team. He has experience playing for Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon State University, which has provided him with incredible knowledge of coaching.
“Team sports makes you establish trust with others, while also competing against each other, but nonetheless working towards the same goal. I believe that this is important for many situations, such as in the workplace,” Coach Daniels said. He has learned the importance of establishing a relationship with his players from a basketball standpoint, but also creating a trust for his players to go to him for advice about anything. “I want my players to feel like they have a voice, and I want them to see me as more of someone they can look up to, rather than just a boss,” Coach Daniels said.
He spoke about the increased demand for coaches. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, coaching jobs are expected to grow by nine percent over the next ten years. With this demand, he still experienced a setback in his coaching career when he didn’t get the coaching job for Pleasant Hill High School, where he had been an assistant coach for two years. When the head coach job opened at his former high school, he jumped on the opportunity. I spoke with a former player of Coach Daniels, Keaton Warner, who explained that “Trevor created a positive and competitive mentality within our team, that made each player feel like they had an important role in the team.”
He expressed his interest in continuing his coaching career at Elmira. He believes he can still make a positive impact in the lives of the students. “I want to continue to help the program as best as I can. I feel like I can make a difference in reaching the kids that others might not be able to, as well as giving them a memorable, high school experience,” Coach Daniels said.
